You ordered your favorite hand soaps and candles during the annual stock-up-and-save event. The box comes and you open it, excited about your purchase. As you pull out the items, half of them have broken pumps, one is leaking, and the candle you ordered as a gift has come out of its box, the lid is off, and chunks of it are laying in the bottom of the box.

How could this happen? A closer look reveals one small strip of pillow pockets and a layer of bubble wrap on the bottom of a box that is far too big for the contents. Without a properly sized box and packaging supplies used the right way to keep the contents in place, the items turned into little missiles every time the box was moved while in transit.

The results were a loss of half the contents that the company had to then reship to the customer for free. If that happens regularly, which the customer service agent suggested was the case, imagine the staggering loss of revenue that company has on an annual basis if the situation is not corrected.

In a society where the minimalist movement and a philosophy of less is more has become popular, those shipping packages have to be careful not to apply that when packaging items for shipment.

So, how could a few changes during the packaging process change that scenario? How can the investment you and your client have made be protected? Below are common packaging supplies and how they should be used to protect your shipment from damage.

Corrugated box, padded envelope, or mailer

When choosing what to ship your item in, consider its size, weight, and if it is fragile. Very large or awkward items could benefit from custom crating, while smaller heavy items may need double or triple-walled corrugated boxes. Small, lightweight items, such as labels or stickers, on the other hand, may be fine in a mailer, while other items just need light protection like that found in a padded envelope.

Just as important is selecting a box or other shipping container that is not too large or too small for the items being shipped as that is the first step in protecting them well. A good rule of thumb is to add about two inches to the height, width, and length of the item to be shipped and choose a box that is closest to that size.

Paper, bubble wrap, air bags, and more

There are many different options for protecting items inside the box, once the proper box size and type have been selected. They range from custom-made foam inserts to bubble wrap, kraft paper, shredded paper, foam peanuts, strips of air bags, and more.

When choosing which to use, it’s important to consider if your item(s) are fragile or if there is more than one and they should be kept from contact with each other. Also, keep in mind how well the packaging needs to cushion the item, or if some compression is acceptable. If they contain liquid, does the lid need to be taped before it’s put in the box? Are you using paper that is dyed and could that dye rub off onto an item you are shipping?

Sealing the box or envelope

The last step, other than labeling the box, is choosing the best way to seal it. Will one strip of water-activated tape do the job? Or will you need multiple strips of adhesive packaging tape?

Don’t forget that tapes, boxes, and mailers can all be custom printed to add to your customer’s experience and brand recognition. A packaging supplies professional such as Pinnacle Packaging can help you with custom printing and also to ensure you choose the right materials to ship your items, so they are well protected while not being wasteful with overuse.

Two packages arrive on your doorstep. Both contain items you’ve been waiting for rather impatiently because you’re so excited. Carrying them inside, you drop them on the table and reach for your box cutter to open the first one.

Which one do you choose first? The plain brown box with a simple label and an unrecognizable return address? Or the other one that makes your eyes light up when you see that the package has your favorite designer’s name splashed across the surface and the tape that seals it?

It doesn’t matter if the plain box contains a pair of jeans you searched for everywhere. The box with the name you recognize has you holding your breath as you open it up and push the decorative paper aside to reveal the item inside.

The embossed card sitting on top has your name on it and a short thank you note written by the person who packed your item for shipping. They signed their name with a flourish, and it was the final piece that made you feel connected to the company you ordered from. Spotting the QR code on the card, you decide to check that out after you try the item on.

Only after you’re done trying it on and following the QR code to leave a favorable review do you remember the other box. You open it up, see the jeans in their plastic bag, and toss aside the plain white invoice sitting on top. Grabbing the jeans, you don’t give much thought to the company you ordered them from.

ROI from Customizing Packaging Supplies

These two very different scenarios are something that nearly every person has experienced, especially in our post-Covid shopping days. They also highlight the ROI companies experience when using customized packaging supplies.

Online shopping is convenient and saves on overhead costs for retailers, but it creates other challenges, especially providing an experience that is remembered by the customer and building a connection that will encourage them to return the next time they need something.

When you consider how customers react to different types of packaging, you can see how putting your branding on your shipping box, the tape, and the paper used to protect the shipment creates excitement and an experience for your customer. The personalized note adds to the feeling of connection.

Statistics put numbers to that customer experience. According to ThinkImpact.com’s statistics on customer retention, 82% of companies say retaining customers is easier than finding new ones. They also point out that repeat customers spend 67% more, and overall, 65-75% of their business comes from retained customers.

Custom packaging supplies are also essential for those drop shipping private-label products. If you are in that industry, as a retailer or shipper, understanding the value of custom packaging supplies is critical. The customer doesn’t know a third party is involved, but they do know if their experience is memorable and if they are likely to return the next time they need something.

At Pinnacle Packaging, we can help you find custom packaging options to fit your budget and how to get the most for your money.

When you think of your packaging supplier, what comes to mind? Are they just another vendor who provides the products you need to keep things running smoothly and your customers happy? Or are they a trusted partner who goes well beyond the basics of ordering supplies and sending you the tracking information?

If you have yet to truly partner with your packaging supplier, you aren’t alone. It’s not unusual for retailers and others who use packaging supplies to think of their supplier as a vendor and nothing more.

However, shifting that thought pattern and partnering with your packaging supplier has several benefits you might not have considered. Sure, packaging suppliers sell everything you could need to package your products for sale, display them in a retail location, and ship them to your customers, but having a partner takes it to the next level.

For instance, in our catalog, you will find everything from corrugated and retail boxes, bags, mailers, and bubble wrap to janitorial and warehouse supplies, safety products, tape, and much more.

Here are several ways that having a packaging supplies partner will save you time and money:

Expertise

As a partner, you can trust us as your packaging supplier to have extensive knowledge of not only every item in our catalog, but we have practical experience that helps us guide you to the products best suited for your unique products and needs.

No two companies are the same, and it’s the nuances—taking the time to understand your needs, your ideas, your products, and your budget—that take you from getting products that work to products that are perfect for you.

Elevating Your Customer Experience

It is easier—and more cost-effective—to retain customers and get repeat business than to find new customers. Part of the way companies do that is by giving their customers the best experience possible. This could include the unboxing experience–using packaging supplies that look and feel luxurious, including a handwritten note on a branded notecard, and ensuring your product is well packaged, so no damage occurs while in transit.

Your packaging supplier should discuss this with you and offer options that meet your goals. Our clients always appreciate that we have options for almost every budget.

Saves You Time

Faced with a catalog that has thousands of different items and variations on each of them can be overwhelming, and you shouldn’t have to take a course on how to select packaging supplies. We are able to save you time and headaches by cutting through all the catalog noise and directing you to the items that meet your criteria.

Meeting Your Budget

We understand how critical it is to stay within your budget. We do this by being transparent. There will be no surprises on your invoice, we do our best to let you know if there are price increases on the horizon so you can plan for them, and whenever possible, we work to creatively meet your product and pricing needs. This could mean suggesting an alternative product you might not have considered.

We are Your Biggest Supporter

At Pinnacle Packaging, we are here to help you find wins for your business. We cheer you on and support your efforts to meet your customers’ needs while keeping a healthy bottom line. This is what it means to be a partner. We are in this together.

Where are small businesses buying packaging supplies? It’s a good question, and a lot of people seem to be asking this. Many are buying them from a combination of retailers that range from office supply stores to warehouse clubs, online suppliers, and even convenience stores such as Walgreens or CVS.

Why do they buy there? Many businesses might tell you it’s a combination of convenience and price. They don’t, however, know what they are missing by not working with a specialty packaging supplier that offers everything in one place.

Others do know, and they purchase their supplies from us here at Pinnacle Packaging. We think the better question is, “Why are small businesses buying packaging supplies from Pinnacle Packaging?”

Here are the top reasons why small (and large) businesses choose Pinnacle Packaging over the others:

Expertise

As someone who has been immersed in the packaging industry for many years, I know how to help you navigate the staggering number of options you have, from brands to sizing, color, and functionality. Even more, I often find solutions for my clients’ challenges in creative ways that still meet budget constraints.

Customizable

It’s not unusual for a client to have a unique situation that gives them a headache—until they give me a call. I love providing my clients with options that are a better pain reliever than Advil. Sometimes a custom solution is needed for a particular product line, while other times, it’s for a single item that needs attention which could include custom crating and shipping. We also offer custom packaging solutions for boxes, sheets, tubes, foam, and more.

Branding

Branding is integral to marketing your products, including packaging. We offer clients an extensive list of options in this area, from custom printing logos, QR codes, website addresses, and much more on shipping boxes, tapes, envelopes, tissue paper, etc. The options are almost endless and limited only by your imagination.

Variety

Did you know there are thousands of different boxes you can purchase? We offer more than 170 different corrugated boxes in our catalog. That doesn’t include the many other types of boxes we sell. The same can be said for tape, papers, cushioning products, mailers, and cable ties. The list could go on and on. Sometimes it’s hard to know which is the best for your needs when you have so many choices. This is when my expertise allows me to single out the best options for you, and often is quite different than what clients have in mind. This helps save you time, money, and aggravation.

Availability

We work with many different vendors, allowing us to find what you need when you need it—within reason. Supply chain issues continue to cause difficulties, but we can tell you how much lead time is necessary, so you get your items in time. Planning is the key, and we can help you with this.

Convenience

Instead of ordering three things from one place, two from another, and a bulk order with a third, why not shop with a small business that can provide everything you need? Knowing you have an expert contact who can order all the packaging supplies you need gives you peace of mind instead of costing you the extra time to dig through invoices searching for the one order that hasn’t arrived yet.

Pricing

Are we the cheapest? Probably not. However, we work hard to be competitive and offer exceptional value you won’t find elsewhere. We would love for you to give us a try and become part of the Pinnacle family.

For help with your packaging supply needs, call us at (773) 235-6060.

On August 1, 1981, teenagers were captivated when Tom Freston launched MTV. Freston talked about his idea, saying, “Innovation is taking two things that exist and putting them together in a new way.” And that’s exactly what he did with music and video, giving his audience a new way to see their favorite bands perform—in the comfort of their living room.

When it comes to the packaging industry, innovation, and the trends that arise, they may not seem as monumental to the average consumer as MTV was to the music world. However, they are creative, exciting, and can have just as much of an impact on the packaging industry.

For 2023, there are a lot of trends on the horizon, and some seem more viable than others. There are a few that I find more compelling, and it will be interesting to see which of the others rise to the top and are adopted by retailers and others in the industry.

Internet of Packaging:

The Internet of Packaging (IoP) might seem to be an odd phrase, but it’s all about bringing the latest technology to the packaging industry. These technologies address marketing, tracking, optimization, and processes and make products traceable and capable of engaging consumers.

In a world where everyone is connected through their phone, tablet, and computer, brands constantly look for new ways to connect with consumers. Smart labels use QR codes, which we’ve talked about before. They are a quick, contactless, and eco-friendly way to download everything from a menu to directions, a website, landing pages for products, instructions, or warranty registration materials for a product. The list of potential applications is virtually limitless.

Companies can also use RFID tags on them. RFID, or radio frequency identification, are tags with a circuit and antenna that transmit data to an RFID reader. They are used in various applications, including supply chain management, inventory management, tracking assets, ID badges, counterfeit protection, and controlling access to restricted areas.

Biodegradable Peanuts:

Traditional packing peanuts do a great job protecting items during shipping, but the fact they cannot be recycled and are not biodegradable, taking hundreds of years for the polystyrene to break down in landfills, makes them unpopular with businesses and consumers.

The newly developed biodegradable peanuts are made with starch, primarily from corn, water, and herbal extracts. They don’t require any complicated process for recycling as they dissolve in water.

Plant-Based Plastics:

Plant-based plastics are biodegradable and recyclable polymers that use plants such as maize and straw. They are also called bioplastics, drawing attention to their sustainability and eco-friendly properties, something consumers are increasingly demanding.

According to Grandviewresearch.com, The global green packaging market was valued at around $274.1 billion in 2020. The green packaging market includes bioplastics, recyclable paper & plastics, plant-based biomaterial, organic fabrics, and refurbished products.

Grass Cardboard:

Grass cardboard is gaining popularity in the packaging industry, just as bamboo, hemp, and eucalyptus are used more often on the consumer side for papers and fabrics. Processed grass fibers are used to replace the wood pulp in traditional cardboard boxes, saving countless trees annually as the grasses can be harvested three times per year.

In the same way traditional cardboard is recyclable, grass cardboard is 100% recyclable and compostable, providing an excellent alternative to plastic packaging. The manufacturing process has additional benefits of saving water and energy over traditional processes and is also chemical-free.

Happy New Year! This time of year is known for those pesky little things called resolutions. They come with a lot of pressure to make a commitment to change something or adopt a new behavior—gym, anyone?

Instead, let’s take time to be intentional and reflect on last year first, to look at every area and take stock. Give yourself a state of the company address and identify what went well and what didn’t. Did you know research shows that writing notes down by hand makes it easier to remember them later?

Why should you do this? After all, you stay on top of your business all year long and know what you need to do next. However, reflection can be the key to peace and productivity.

When done purposefully, reflection often brings clarity, and it only takes one moment, one idea, or one shift in business to take it to the next level. It also gives you a reason to celebrate the good things that took place, and who doesn’t like taking the time to thank those who made it happen?

So, what’s a good way to go about reflection? First, revisit your goals. Look at those you’ve achieved and those you haven’t. How fast did you reach the ones that are done, and what is holding you back from meeting others? What have you learned?

As you continue the reflection process, be kind and honest, but don’t be harsh and judgmental. Learn from your mistakes and your successes. Ask yourself what was in your control and what wasn’t. How can you change that?

Other questions might include: What can you take from last year to build upon this year? What worked well that you should continue? What should be left behind?

As you shift from reflection to moving forward, use the answers from your review to guide you as you develop your goals for this year. As you work on goal setting, ask yourself, where do you want to be at the end of the year? What does that look like, and what will it take to reach it?

From there, you will be able to define your goals and move forward with confidence. One thing to remember is to be straightforward in setting goals. Simplicity and clarity go hand in hand, allowing you and your team to work together and achieve great things throughout the year.

I am here to help support your goals, and when it comes to budgeting for your packaging supplies, understanding more about them, and what options you have, my new magazine also has a lot of guidance to offer.

You can find this magazine—a compilation of my most informative blog posts over the last two years, and I am always available at (773) 235-6060 to answer any questions you may have.

The holidays are full of smiling kids, men in red suits and beards, and stress. Lots of stress. The reasons for this are nearly infinite and differ from one person to another. But at the core of it, we are trying to fit more activities into our already hectic schedules, and feelings—good, sad, and hard—often find their way into the mix as well.

Here are several ways to help you reduce the stress in your life this holiday season. I hope you find it to be helpful so that you can destress and sit with a cup of hot chocolate watching your favorite movie.

I’ve also tucked in a suggestion that can help you save time and stress at work, not only for this season but all year round.

Feelings are OK

The holidays can be hard if you’ve lost someone you were close to (even if it was years ago), if you can’t be with those you love, or if you have difficult memories from years past. Instead of pushing them down or trying to ignore them—most often unsuccessfully—try acknowledging them. Cry if you need to. Talk about it, even to your dog or cat. Then, let go of it for as long as you are able.

Spend time Outside

Whether you are in a warm climate or a snowy one, getting outside and enjoying nature is an excellent way to reduce stress. Be intentional about your time outdoors—listen for the birds, feel the grass or sand under your feet, make a snowball or snow angel, and reconnect with your inner 10-year-old. Remember the joy of being outside? The freedom?

Make Self-Care a Priority

Taking care of yourself gives you the ability to care for others and keeps stress down. What helps you relax? Is it going to the gym, getting a massage, reading a book, listening to music on loud, or indulging in retail therapy? Choose something that helps you relax and feel rejuvenated.

It’s OK to Say No

During the holidays, there can be a lot of demands on your time. It might be parties you are invited to, cookies and other dishes you are asked to make, shopping for the perfect gift, or decorating the house that creates extra stress. Did you realize that you CAN say no? Tell whoever—or yourself—that you can’t this year, and you hope they understand.

Shift Your Focus

If you are getting frustrated or overwhelmed and want to hide in a corner somewhere, shifting your focus can be incredibly beneficial. Instead of all the negative thoughts, think about every reason you have to be grateful. A friend once told me that there is no room for negative thoughts when she focuses on gratefulness.

Be Kind to Others

When you see others struggling or being unpleasant, break the cycle and reach out in kindness. Maybe it’s just a smile, or perhaps it means paying them a compliment or shifting a conversation if someone is getting snarky. Usually, an unpleasant person is suffering in some way, and it helps the rest of us if we remember that.

Reduce Business Stress by Reading a Magazine

If you feel stressed on the business front, give my new magazine, The Review, a read. I’ve collected my most helpful, impactful blog posts from the past two years and put them together in a magazine to help you with everything from boxes to tape, QR codes, and much more. Read it from cover to cover, or use it as a reference tool and search for the topic you need help with.

Some items your business needs are straightforward. Copy paper. Kleenex. Black pens. The list is endless. The list of complex solutions business owners often seek is even longer and can be challenging, with nuances that often only industry experts are aware of.

The reason for seeking out experts is pretty clear—we can’t all be experts in everything. You probably have a lot of experts in your business arsenal, but do you have a trusted packaging partner? Packaging is much more than boxes, filler, and tape.

It’s the image, marketing, first impressions, repeat business, and much more.

When you make it a priority to find trusted business partnerships in unexpected places and industries, those who you can rely on and trust to have your best interest in mind and offer you solutions to your biggest challenges, you save time, money, and energy. You also get better quality, on-time delivery, and no unpleasant surprises.

It’s about using quality packaging supplies that appropriately protect your products from breakage, that look good, and send a positive message to your customers. It says you take pride in carefully providing quality products, and it’s important to you that they arrive in excellent condition. Adding simple touches such as a handwritten note tells your customer that you care about them as a person.

So, how does developing a relationship with a packaging partner you can trust benefit your business?

1. They provide creative solutions to your most difficult packaging problems.

As your packaging expert, we do more than measure your product or say 10 items will fit in this box. We know if you need a single or double-walled box. If you need anti-static film, foam, or bubble wrap, or if a water-activated tape is best for your purposes. And we can suggest dozens of different ways to package items, working hard to meet your pricing requirements.

2. With thousands of different options available in the packaging industry, trusted packaging partners help you sort through the noise to provide you with real options that will work.

Have you ever sat with a packaging catalog and felt overwhelmed within five minutes? You aren’t alone. As your trusted partner, we can talk with you about what you need and cut through it all, giving you suggestions that work, from the size and shape of boxes to fillers and tapes. We are also experts when it comes to custom-printed boxes and other items.

3. Packaging partners save you money by understanding what you need and ordering the correct items the first time.

Have you ever ordered a custom item that cannot be returned, only to find out it’s wrong and you can’t use it? It’s a painful experience that too many business owners have gone through. When working with a trusted packaging partner, you don’t have to worry about that. There is no more guesswork involved, and you know that we want your success as much as you do.

Does this mean we will be the cheapest option for you? Hard to say, but we know that we will provide you with the BEST option. Value depends on your perspective and how much it means to you to get exactly what you need and a product you will be proud to use when sending your products to your customers.

For help ordering your packaging products, consider trusting Pinnacle Packaging. Give us a call at (773) 235-6060.

Boxes seem to be everywhere, especially at this time of year. However, if you are a business that ships products to customers or regularly uses boxes for other purposes, you already know there is a box for every use.

There is an impressive variety that differs depending on their construction and purpose. The key to selecting the right box depends on a number of things–the size of the box compared to the size of the item(s) being placed inside, the strength, thickness, and color.

Let’s Measure!

Have you ever wondered how to measure a box? Boxes are measured and noted in our catalog as L (Length) x W (Width) x H (Height). Length is always the longest side, width is the shorter side of the box, and height is measured at one of the corners, from the bottom to the top edge.

You must measure the item(s) you’re shipping and compare that to the box you plan to use. If a box is too big or too small, you risk the item being separated from its box and an unhappy customer who didn’t get what they ordered. That can also occur if you don’t fill empty spaces inside the box before sealing. That can result in a broken box (especially if the item is heavy) or breakage due to the products bouncing around.

What is a Box Code Key?

There is also a Box Code Key, which can help you further determine if the box you are looking at in our catalog is the right one for your purposes. The key is located on the bottom right of odd-numbered catalog pages from 9-29. The codes in the description section tell you if a box is SW (Single Wall), ECT (Edge Crush Test), FOL (Full Overlap), or one of the other types. There are a few boxes that include additional information in the description, such as Haz Mat Box 350#DW (Double Wall).

Know Your Box Strength

Box strength is another important factor. Have you ever looked at a box and tried to figure out if it would hold that heavy item you want to ship? Luckily, we give you that information, too. The key for that information can be found in the boxes section of the catalog, on the left side of even pages 8-28. ECT-32 means a box will hold up to 65 pounds, while ECT-155 TW is made to hold 201-300 pounds as long as it is distributed evenly and packaged, so it stays in place. There are several different strengths in between those as well.

Other factors to consider when selecting the appropriate box for your items include box thickness, which can be single, double, or triple-walled, and what type of fill you plan to use to protect your items and keep them from shifting while in transit. Fill can be paper shreds, rolled paper crumpled and placed in open spaces, Styrofoam peanuts, or air pillows.

Andrew Grant once said, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” That has never been more true than for a new online business when shipping products to its customers.

When you don’t have an opportunity to meet prospects and customers face to face, every interaction you have with them matters. From the first ad a prospect sees, to the first time they visit your website, you make an impression on them. Then, once they’ve bought your product and are handed the box you’ve shipped to them, these moments tell customers what they can expect if they become a loyal customer.

Could you use all generic boxes, tape, and filler to keep packaging and shipping costs down? Sure, but at what cost to repeat business? Consider the impact if you spend more on packaging supplies that are good quality, are customizable, and give your customers an experience that says they’ve bought quality items.

Would that be more likely to earn their repeat business if they ordered an item they could easily find at another shop? How can you pick and choose where to spend more and how to save while still giving your customers something they didn’t expect?

I’m here to give you some food for thought and suggestions to help you navigate the confusing world of packaging. To be clear, I am talking about the packaging products used when shipping your items to your customer, not the packaging you put your product in for display.

Let’s Talk Boxes

When shipping products to customers, you need to consider if your products are breakable, heavy, liquids, things that melt or cannot be frozen, and so on. Every unique product can require a different solution.

When we talk about the outer packaging, most products are shipped in corrugated boxes, which come in standard kraft paper brown. They also come in white, self-sealing side load, double wall, triple wall, weather-resistant, multi-depth, and in every size and shape imaginable. There are padded paper flats and plastic bags to consider as well.

For use inside your box, to protect your products, there are also corrugated sheets in brown and white, anti-slip, flat or corrugated, bubble wrap, foam sheeting, loose fill, and air pillows. There are also a wide variety of papers, shredded paper, and tissue in just about any color you could want.

When it comes to sealing your box, there are also options. Those include packaging tape and water-activated tapes, colored tape, and many more options in different colors, sizes, and strengths.

Customization

Customization is where you can upscale your first impression. Sure, a white box sends an impression of neat, clean, and fresh, but one that is customized with your logo and perhaps a QR code that takes customers on the next step of the journey to leave a review, enter a contest, or join in on an event will take your packaging to the next level.

Using tissue or colored shreds that compliment your company logo is another nice touch that won’t cost extra, and a sweet, handwritten notecard saying thank you for the purchase goes a long way and helps customers remember you.

Tape is also customizable and can be a fun way to add another layer onto the customer experience.
